As dentists we are often the primary practitioners involved in diagnosing and treating
facial pain. In most cases the cause is either tooth or muscle related, both of which we
are well equipped to deal with. At some stage every practitioner involved in treating
chronic pain will encounter cases related to systemic disorders, or cases that are
complicated by medication interactions. It is likely that we will need to order blood tests
to confirm or reach a diagnosis, or to order advanced imaging to provide a full picture of
the case. Understanding the patient's metabolic status as well as the medications they
are taking, or should be taking, may help to save you from months of fruitless
treatment; treatment that frustrates you as a clinician and causes the patient to lose hope.
This course is designed to explore the avenues that you can take when you find yourself in this situation. It will help you understand more fully what you are confronting on a day to day basis.
